Rover – Assembling the Chassis

by Puck on December 1st, 2009

Last week the rover arrived and I spent a bit of time futzing with the bits putting him together.  For your consideration, here are the baby pictures.

Building a Rover

  1. Open the box from Lynxmotion and then pull out all the bits to look them over
  2. Solder a noise canceling cap on each motor (Motors are inductive & noisy)
  3. Hook up the control lines to each motor (See my H-Bridge article)
  4. Mount the motors to the side rails of the chassis
  5. Attach wheel mounts and wheels
  6. The Rover meets his new Rabbit Microprocessor brain

The hardest part of this entire process was getting the rubber tires on the plastic rims.  I don’t want to go into detail but there was some pulling, pushing, and a bit of profanity involved.  Everything else was smooth sailing.

  1. Yes the fit of the tires on the rims is very tight. However it is better than the opposite problem of the tires being very soft, squishy, and require tedious gluing to the rim to prevent them from falling off. We searched for a long tome to find tires that could withstand the payload required for these rovers. I also routinely spew profanities when mounting the tires to the rims. lol :D
